INFRASTRUCTURE STUDY
PROJECT

Year:       2020
Lighting:   Light Electric

Role:       Design [Freelance]

Light Electric is a London-based lighting design and research studio. This concept was developed to explore an imagined alternative application of their highly adaptable lighting solutions.

Focused to the production of temporary installations for exhibitions and events, the studio delivers highly scalable lighting interventions to a global client base. Freelance services were rendered to produce a lighting concept that would study and reinterpret in-house design innovations for use in the public realm.

With the benefit of previous collaborative experience of the studio’s practice, inspiration could be drawn from past research and delivered projects. Exploring multiple potential applications - cable-stayed bridge ‘Viaduc de Millau’ was selected as a canvas for it’s scale, scenery and structural merit. With a view to completely re-imagine how lighting could be integrated to the structure, the concept sought to respond to functional, practical and aesthetic opportunities.

At over 2.4 kilometres in length, a strategy was devised to concentrate all power, data and light sources to a series of ‘centralised’ locations. Seven structural pylons spanning the bridge at evenly spaced intervals would be utilised to significantly reduce maintenance and cabling points. Light Electric’s signature techniques would ensure even and focused redistribution of light to the road surface, facilitating safe and functional illumination.

A coordinated configuration of lighting equipment would result in striking patternation effects, which could be mirrored to the underside of the bridge at select points. RGBW control, movement and precision reflectors were introduced to produce a broad and dynamic, decorative design element to the concept.
