TROW GALLERY FACADE
PROJECT [STUDY]

Year:   2023
Role:   Design & Visualisation

A computational study exploring how applied lighting can engage algorithmic design for problem solving. This research utilises advanced logic systems as a primary tool for light planning and concept development.

The study narrative centres lighting to the street-facing facade of project ‘Trow Gallery’, a contemporary art space occupying three levels of a heritage listed property in Central London. Targeting multiple project requirements, the study explores how algorithmic design can be engaged in direct coordination with light and lighting to address the following:

i) An understated yet defined visual representation of the ultra-modern brand housed within the heritage context.
ii) A balanced approach to privacy (specifically at ground level) for staff and patrons whilst maintaining a clear message of invitation to the public and locality.
iii) The ability to visually adapt, express and communicate in response to a specific season, exhibition, event and daily business hours.

Focused to street level, the most effective algorithmic application sought to consolidate numerous solutions to the configuration of an optical window treatment. Precise manipulation of surface texture and displacement would produce a transparency and distortion composed to optimise light and visual transfer between the interior and exterior ground floor. The optical properties and organic patternation of the element would absorb and redistribute applied light to striking visual effect, identifying the site as a space engaging in contemporary artistic practice.

In-ground uplighting, linear and washer luminaire technology would be integrated and focused to the architectural arrangement - delivering a layered and highly tunable lighting design. RGBW colour changing elements and sophisticated control system allow for programming, scene setting, adjustment and maintenance.
